Now, letâs sweep the brainâŠ
For my Golden Girlâs fans, read this like Sophia would. (If not, read it in your own voice. It will still be great!)
Picture it: South Kingstown, RI. Winter. 1994.
I'm a front-end manager at Rich's Department Store, working 40 hours while finishing my senior year of high school. Back then, the work requirement was 12 months of employment before becoming eligible to apply for health insurance, which I needed before turning 18.
It's a Friday, so printed payroll checks are waiting for my staff and me in the cashier's office. Payday baby! During lunch, I hop into my 1983 Chevrolet Chevette Scooter (fancy red two-doorâŠpicture it) and head over to the bank to turn my printed paper into CASH. Some for me, some for my bank account. Rent is due on the first of the month.
I pull up to the drive-through to find these new fancy tubes that take your paper and send it to the teller sitting comfortably inside the building. She returns my cash envelope, a deposit slip, and a lollipop for being a loyal Fleet Bank customer.
Oooh, I hope it's orange!
Returning to work to finish my shift, I step into the office to use the telephone and page all of my friends separately that I am "IN" for the weekend festivities. I will need to stop home to change my dress clothes, then dial up into AOL to see if I've "GOT MAIL" before heading out to meet them.
I return to the sales floor, supporting my cashiers as they address long lines of holiday shoppers with their printed flyers, clipped paper coupons, and handwritten checks for payment. Is it 5 pm yet? How on earth did we function that slowly?!?
The point is we've grown over the past 29 years. In life and business.
That young girl was me. Now, read this in my voice to yourself.
I'm grateful that I no longer have to manually shift my car, drive to the bank, or dial-up to the internet ever again. I do, however, still enjoy an orange lollipop from time to time.
As we approach 2023, we have experienced warp-speed growth and change in life and business since 2020. Each change and growth opportunity took steps. Yes, the pandemic pushed the accelerator down for a moment and moved us out of our comfort zone and into new terrain.
Disruption creates opportunities for entrepreneurs.
The most change was by outside influence, some by our choices. Before you know it, you are receiving money in your bank account while you sleep at night, you can message your friends and family in bulk, in real-time, with your face and fun stickers or filters, and thank goodness we've moved on from dial-up internet service!
But each day was lived, one at a time.
That is how business growth happens too. One day, one step, one idea, one degree. The point is, in business, one consistent thing is that change is constant.
Change helps move us forward, and it helps us grow. And if you wait too long to catch up to some trends, you get left behind.
Change is progress.
Change can be challenging. Did you know that you don't have to do entrepreneurship alone? Science even says you'll be more successful if you don't!
Having an idea or goal: 10% likely to achieve the goal
Consciously deciding that you will do it: 25%
Deciding when you will do it: 40%
Planning how to do it: 50%
Committing to someone that you will do it: 65%
Having a specific accountability appointment with someone you've committed to: 95%
Match having accountability with my business experience, and change will happen.
You can practice being comfortable with change. More on that next week!
