🧠 Weekly Mind Sweep #96| Curated Conversation | Kindness

Nice is easy; kindness is impactful.

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, it can be easier to go from one thing to another without reflecting on the human implications of what we just did. We unconsciously meet the world with nice smiles and pleasantries as we navigate life.

However, we're not just entrepreneurs; we are humans.

kind·ness

/ˈkīn(d)nəs/

noun

the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

Last month's deep dive into failure has shifted my perspective on words and their meanings. So, for kindness, I dug a little deeper to find something that resonated with me.

"We define kindness as being honest, saying the hard truths, and tackling the tough challenges head-on in order to create lasting, positive change and better results." [1]

This perspective landed more deeply for me because of the specificity of being honest rather than just being friendly or nice. I value relationships where saying hard truths is the norm because we love the connection we've built and want to grow a deeper human connection. Tackling tough challenges head-on creates better results not only in life but also in business.

As entrepreneurs, clear, kind communication and relationships are the foundation of our businesses. When we value kindness and consider how we treat ourselves and others, it directly impacts our colleagues, customers, and the entrepreneurial community.

Kindness can be an attribute that speaks volumes about your character.

Are you being nice to someone, or are you genuinely being kind?

  • Nice is being polite, pleasant, and agreeable. We are nice to others as we navigate the outside world and go along to get along in society. Nice is an automatic response. We've learned to behave "nice" regardless of our inner feelings or thoughts. Nice can be superficial and used in a manipulative way.

  • Kindness is authentic, meaningful, and powerful. Kindness is caring for other people in meaningful ways within relationships. It allows us to show up as ourselves and build deeper connections. We create a true like, know, and trust factor from a place of kindness. Pure kindness changes the world.

Being kind is good for your body, mind, and business.

Humans benefit from giving, receiving, and witnessing kindness. Similar to our month on Compassion, it starts from within. If we are unkind to ourselves in our minds, are we genuinely being kind to others, or are we being nice?

World Kindness Day falls on Monday, November 13 [2]. I'm giddy that it will be "Manage Your Mind Week" in the Curated Conversation world!

I look forward to digging into our businesses and our minds from a kindness perspective this month.

How does the definition of kindness land for you? How kind is your inner voice?

A place for my digressions.

[2] World Kindness Day will be celebrated worldwide on November 13, 2023. First introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, World Kindness Day offers an opportunity to highlight good deeds in the community and the common thread of kindness.
