You know that I am new to eyeglasses if you've followed along since April 2023. I went from zero to sixty with progressive lenses overnight. #OverAchiever

My day-to-day life revolves around opening my eyes and seeing, getting in the car and getting where I need to go, and moving about the world as though nothing has changed. But I've been waking up each morning, putting my glasses on, and experiencing motion sickness. 

I know that my eyes literally connect to my brain and that it takes time and patience to build new neural connections to see things clearly again. I know that I need to accept that this is now how I can see the world. But it doesn't feel good. 

Frustration happens.

If I let my internal editor take control of my thoughts, I can hear it say things like

  • why is this happening

  • why is this taking so long to adjust to?

  • why can't I just have my 20/20 vision back?

I can choose to let these thoughts take control of my emotions, dysregulate my nervous system to the point of fight or flight and then project my frustration outward to those I interact with.

Or, I can be patient. 

This weekend I experienced that my patience, tolerance, and perseverance have paid off. I can now comfortably wear my glasses every day. As a result, I see and feel better!

Now, let’s sweep the brain…

The dictionary is my first stop when working on a new topic for Curated Conversations. 

While I do use an online version now, I've always loved a hard copy and dreamed of a day when I would use a yellow highlighter every time I looked up a word and that by the time I hit age 50, I would have a book of yellow amazingness.

Patience

  1. the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

This past Friday, I connected with a group of Phenomenal Women Drinking Caffeine. Together, we pulled a card from Virginia L’Bassi’s  My Soul Flower deck.

A new guest to our table, Julia, brought this idea:

Patience is feeling kind while you wait.

Can we sit with this idea for a moment? This statement aligns with how I choose to talk to myself and how I interact with others.

This idea is a mantra for life and business

Society has taught us to be impatient. 

  • click to pay

  • on-demand

  • beat the line passes

But, unfortunately, our dopamine-loving brains don't know how to be patient anymore.

Being patient is a learned skill

Choosing to slow down, listen, feel, observe, and be silent will result in

  • Confidence

  • Decisiveness

  • Wisdom

  • Success

  • Acceptance

For May, let's have more conversations about patience and how we can learn this skill for ourselves, others, and our businesses.
