Hat's Off to “Meaning Meets Profit”

As fellow like-hearted entrepreneurs driven by purpose and passion, I'm confident you have created a business around something meaningful. You've had an experience that has brought specific change into focus in your life, the life of someone you love, and/or the world around you.

Your work is fulfilling and gratifying.

Intention and meaning have given you the power to create something remarkable.

On the other hand, running a business requires you to put on a different hat and manage tasks that may fall outside your expertise. (Hint: That's where I come in to support you!)

As you pull this hat our from the dark depths of your closet, dust it off (cough cough), and consider putting it on, you think to yourself:

"Weird, where did this hat come from?"

"Why the heck did I buy "this" hat?!"

Or maybe it sounds something like:

"Ugh, I don't want to wear this hat!"

"This hat matches NOTHING I like to wear! It’s super uncomfortable and itchy!"

Deep breath, my fellow meaning-making machine. There is a reason you've embarked on this adventure.

Your work is why you get out of bed in the morning. You value your independence. You've found purpose in your life through your gift and are doing work you are proud of.

The meaning and purpose of your work are precisely why you have this hat.

But wearing this hat doesn't mean losing sight of your "why." It requires a different perspective—one that I believe holds meaning you'll also understand.

By now, you might tired of hearing me say,

"You can't force a market to want something you love."

(And if you're new here, welcome! Also, where have you been?!)

So, let's don the hat, stick a feather in it, and delve into Five meaningful questions:

  • What do humans need? - Stop looking inside and get outside of yourself. What are you doing with your purpose and gifts to fulfill the needs of others?

    • 🎩 Action you can take today: Conduct market research to identify specific needs and where your audience is challenged. Gather insights by asking questions, conducting interviews, or using social media polls.

  • How do you want to grow forward? What action can you take to make progress in filling your customers' needs while generating revenue? For your business to grow, you need to grow. Are you tired of your story yet?

    • 🎩 Action you can take today: Map out a growth plan that aligns with your values and goals. [*1] Establish measurable goals, like expanding your customer base or increasing sales.

  • Who does it matter to? When you think of the change you want to make, does it matter to the humans you are doing it for? How? Why?

    • 🎩 Action you can take today: Create customer personas to understand your target audience and their needs. Use this information to tailor your messaging, product features, and marketing strategies to speak to your ideal customers.

  • What does the market want? When having conversations with others, what are they telling you they need? Are you listening?

    • 🎩 Action you can take today: Be aware of industry trends, competitor offerings, and customer feedback to find opportunities and potential gaps in the market. Continuously update and adapt your products or services to meet evolving customer needs.

  • What are you afraid of? If you are not generating the money you'd like to make, what is holding you back?

    • 🎩 Action you can take today: Figure out what might trip you up or where you might be getting stuck, and devise backup plans to smooth things over and keep moving forward."

With each question comes an opportunity for growth, a chance to blend meaning with profitability, and a path toward translating this purpose into tangible value for you and for others.

Upon embarking on your entrepreneurial journey, you donned the business hat, symbolizing your commitment to creating change.

Remember, wearing this hat doesn't detract from your 'why.' Instead, it's about adding the feather to merge passion with market demand.

You have the power to change the future of your business.

Together, let's explore how you can align your passion with market needs. Ready for support? Let's connect.

What I’m reading

What I’m reading:

A very special thank you to Kate Hollis for recommending this book to me! (She has a special gift of knowing which book belongs in front of your eyes, heart, and soul.) Thank you, Kate!

From bestselling and award-winning author Patrick deWitt comes the story of Bob Comet, a man who has lived his life through and for literature, unaware that his own experience is a poignant and affecting narrative in itself.

Bob Comet is a retired librarian passing his solitary days surrounded by books and small comforts in a mint-colored house in Portland, Oregon.

One morning on his daily walk he encounters a confused elderly woman lost in a market and returns her to the senior center that is her home. Hoping to fill the void he’s known since retiring, he begins volunteering at the center.

Here, as a community of strange peers gathers around Bob, and following a happenstance brush with a painful complication from his past, the events of his life and the details of his character are revealed.
