The topic of accountability has a broad-spectrum impact on humans.
Our curated topics shine brightly each month, sometimes illuminating the darker spaces of our deepest fears in life and in business. Yet, each word provides a space of reflection, growth, and, if you choose, opportunity.
The word accountability was no different.
This month has been a twist-and-turn journey with a little bit of whiplash near the end. Did you remember to keep your hands inside the ride at all times and only stand once we've come to a complete stop? [1]
We tell ourselves stories every day.
And each of these stories impacts our inner voice, relationships, core memories, and as entrepreneurs, our businesses. We read into words, facial expressions, and emotions from our 1 in 8.1 billion human perspective. Even though we logically know most of what we "hear" is a story not based on fact, we succumb to its negative bias daily. [2]
During our month of discussion, I've witnessed the spectrum of impact that the topic of accountability has.
It ranged from:
Accountability? #BrainShutsDown
Accountability? Don't you tell me what to do!
Accountability? Oh, if I told someone I would do something for them, I'd have to be on my deathbed not to do it!
Accountability? I have a system, thank you very much.
Accountability? I know I need support, but I don't ask for it.
Accountability? I absolutely need support to get anything done.
Some entrepreneurs increase their productivity and decision-making process after implementing accountability systems, while others have struggled with the fear of failure that comes with being accountable.
As humans, we all need personal accountability and responsibility.
And, as entrepreneurs, even more so.
Entrepreneurs can experience one or all of these feelings, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are days when we experience more than one!
We've been raised in a society that groomed us to think inside the box and to do "what, when, and how" we are told. We learn to receive praise or reprimand to determine what is "right" or "wrong" and respond appropriately. For some humans, this works well.
For the other 594 million of us entrepreneurs, it doesn't. [3]
While some entrepreneurs have known their path from a young age, many of us apent time working for other businesses before starting our own. We utilize some of what we've learned from this experience but now see things we'd like to do differently now that we are the CEO of our lives.
We decide to lean into our zones of genius and share our gifts with the world without the systems and support we may need to be successful. As entrepreneurs, we often face the unique challenge of balancing creativity, passion, and business responsibilities.
Working for yourself creates a space of intensified responsibility to do all of the things.
Running a business may seem like a multitasker's dream, but neuroscience shows multitasking is a myth. We eventually reach a point in our journey where the spinning plates of tasks begin to fall, and we are left to face the responsibility of attempting to manage it all. Knowing which plates to prioritize, put down, or let fall can be challenging.
In life, there are things we need to do, even when we don't love doing them.
Oh, hey, responsibility and accountability with a side of guilt and shame. No one asked you to get on this ride. #Jerks
From my brainy business perspective, it doesn't have to be this way! We are the square pegs attempting to align with the round hole of the business world, and it can require us to operate outside our zone of genius.
Accountability touches every aspect of our lives—personally and professionally.
It's a powerful force but doesn't have to be overwhelming.
The key is to recognize
where we need support,
when we need to reevaluate our relationship with accountability,
and how we can start building systems that align with our strengths.
The ride may feel bumpy at times, but remember—you're in the driver's seat. With the right mindset and support, you can navigate the twists and turns of accountability with more ease and success.
My question for you this week :
Which accountability story are you ready to rewrite, and what step will you take today to bring more support, balance, and clarity to your business?
