🧠 Weekly Mind Sweep #129| What’s On My Mind | Success

Let’s sweep the brain…

Last week, I found myself craving ice cream after sending my email—did anyone else feel the same? No, just me? [1]

Sometimes, our cravings and impulses can be influenced, much like our feeling of success.

Words can have weight.

For some, the word success may feel light, and the word failure may feel heavy. Or vice versa. As humans, we've programmed our brains to label things with meaning because having meaning supports us in understanding, which in turn allows us to feel more comfortable.

Oh, hi, comfort zone. Nice to see you again! It's been a minute.

However, our response to anything is learned and based on our upbringing, experiences, surroundings, and the stories we tell ourselves. (well, and so much more, but I’ll try to keep this blog brief!)

Now that we have taken a deep dive into failure [2] and success, I'm ready to give both words a little less weight so my brain and nervous system can have time to regulate.

Let's take a moment.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

I'm also going to practice grace, knowing that quite a bit is happening in the world around us, keeping us on alert, and can interfere with our ability to stay focused on our goals.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

We've got this.

Sometimes, words like success and failure can provoke a deep, visceral response, triggering feelings or emotions that may cut deep. If so, I invite you to look within and see what might be hiding beneath the surface.

Similar to our topic of reality, there are 8.1 billion ways to define success. [3]

We increase motivation and progress by internally acknowledging, feeling, and celebrating success in life and business. The power we have to choose that label may feel a bit overwhelming.

Success and failure mean different things to different people at different times for different reasons.

My success will look different than your success.

Beware of how you compare.

Success can be fickle. If you compare your business success (or failure) to someone else's, you are likely comparing the end of their story to the beginning of yours.

But of course, you don't know that for sure.

Our brain is designed to take shortcuts.

I mean, it's keeping us upright, breathing, and heart pumping while we walk, talk, and stay out of the way of moving cars. We don't have time to process every minute detail of every single experience.

Your brain may see a business owner's success and immediately tell a story that leaves you in self-doubt.

It's a lie.

It's not fact.

It feels real, but it's not reality.

Believing this truth takes practice, rewiring neural pathways, and practicing the habit of a growth mindset.

Simple, not easy. It's like deciding between mocha chip and Oreo ice cream while the teenager stares back at you with impatience of your ability to decide. No, just me? Weird.

When we know better, we can do better; when we do better, we are more successful in business and life.

You are in control of your personal and professional success, and you've had the power all along. (Cue the Wizard of Oz music…damn that witch.)

Are you ready to take the next step?

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. If you're feeling ready for support, reach out—I'm here to help you navigate the path to your success.

Can you think of a time when something that felt like a big failure ended up being a huge success? What did you learn from that experience?

What I’m reading

What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing

Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand.

“Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationships. It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives.”—Oprah Winfrey

This book is going to change the way you see your life.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question.

Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
