🔥Weekly Mind Sweep #54 | Mind Your Business | Ego
January 2023
Week 53: Curated Conversation; Ego
*Week 54: Mind Your Business; Ego
Week 55: Manage Your Mind; Ego
Week 56: Contemplation; What’s On My Mind: My Thoughts On Ego
Now, let’s sweep the brain…
Here is a super easy conversation to have with yourself and your colleagues. Your business and your ego.
Pfft.
The door is always open, but please check your ego before you enter.
Ego is everywhere, and this includes your business. Whether it's checking your own or witnessing it in others, there is no place for it to hide.
Here are a few examples:
A local women's conference asks you to speak as a panelist, and you think, "Hell Yeah, I'll tell my story!" You may also experience "Who me? Who am I?"
Oh, hi ego.
A client asks you to support them in making a crucial decision around their business, and you think, "I know the right way to solve this problem!” However, you may also experience "Who me? Who am *I* to tell YOU how to run your business?"
Oh, hi ego.
Your colleague asks you to collaborate on a big event that will expose you to new people, give you valuable experience, and bring you some camaraderie.
You think, "Heck yeah, I'm the right candidate for the job!" You may, again, experience "Who me? Who am I to collaborate with amazing women like you?"
Oh, hi ego.
But is it wrong to feel this way? The short answer is no.
Sometimes, a stroked ego supports our courage to seize an opportunity.
Sometimes, a stroked ego allows us to build 1% more confidence in ourselves and our ability.
Sometimes, when our ego is stroked, we take it a little step too far, and we may make mistakes.
We might even fall flat on our faces, like when we tried walking in 3" heels after spending five years in sneakers.
From my perspective, we need all these experiences to be who we are, learn and grow from, and gain awareness. The ego is much bigger than its simple definition of a person's sense of self-esteem.
It's conscious and unconscious.
It's personal and public.
It's past, and it's present.
The opposite of ego's definition is meekness or timidness, and in business, that makes the mountain much higher to climb. But, as humans, we need ego to survive.
But it's important to “chickity-check yo'self before you wreck yo'self"

Remember my blog about confident humility? I used the visual example of being a child on a seesaw with a friend and using your tippy toes to keep the board straight and even across, reaching the ultimate balance.
Nothing is perfect. We can't always be on the upswing of the seesaw with the wind blowing through our hair in delight. But, on the other hand, we sure don't want to always be on our butts screaming, "What the heck?!"
Ready for the deep dark secret of achieving the perfect balance of ego? You know you've been waiting your whole life for this fantastic insight! Are you sitting down?
Practice.
Ta Da! You're welcome.
In all seriousness, that is what we're doing in our Curated Conversations. Monday mornings, 8 am.
I know, I know, it's early.
On a MONDAY.
But, we recently had a new guest join and, in the end, said, "I feel so inspired to start my week! I can’t wait until next Monday!"
^Notice, I'm not alone. It takes a village.
