Week 61: Contemplation; What’s On My Mind: My Thoughts On Neurodiversity
New to the Weekly MindSweep? Past issues live here.
My boys and I moved to Framingham, MA., in 2015. It was the summer before they entered 4th grade. It didn't take long for them to realize that even though this school was new to them, it was a very similar model to the school they had left behind.
One twin took it upon himself to research schools of past decades, only to be astonished that what we define as a classroom looked eerily similar to classrooms from 50+ years ago. “Mom, why haven’t schools changed?”
Despite how far we have come, he wasn't wrong.
Some things have changed for the better. We have recognized:
Our children require an inclusive, equitable environment.
Learning needs to meet them where they are at.
Some things have changed for the worse. We have witnessed:
Society value education and rewards knowledge over our required need for physical movement and students with different strengths.
Punitive action for students and teachers receiving "less than" standardized testing results.
I think the entrepreneurial experience has been similar.
Now, let’s sweep the brain…
Neurodivergent is a non-medical term that describes people whose brains develop or work differently.
It can refer to an individual with cognitive variation such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and others. Genetic, environmental factors, trauma, or infectious disease can drive these diagnoses.
Natural variations in the human genome are responsible for each brain thinking and feeling differently.
Additionally, individuals will have their own social preferences and ways of learning, communicating, or perceiving their environment.
Neurodivergent individuals often have higher-than-average abilities.
Neurodiversity embraces the view that variations are part of being human and that these differences in brain development are not "problematic." This more inclusive perspective prioritizes supporting individuals as they are rather than expecting them to behave "typically."
More and more neurodivergent humans recognize that entrepreneurship provides the necessary flexibility. Entrepreneurship can provide a way to more comfortably manage their learning methods, communication, and social preferences.
However, it can also bump into a system or process with "norms/expectations" based on assumptions.
Our society has built systems based on the assumption that only one form of the human mind exists.
I’m here to change that.
We can turn your phenomenal ideas into profitability in a comfortable, attainable, and actionable way.
I'm here to support you and your beautiful mind.
If you could use support creating systems and processes for your business, you belong here; I can help.
