Week 73: Contemplation; What’s on My Mind: My Thoughts on Patience
New to the Weekly MindSweep? Past issues live here.
Some of us have been entrepreneurs for most of our lives.
You may have dipped in and out of working for someone else, but you operate to the beat of your own drum. {I see you, you're my people}. 💜
Some of you have worked in corporate or for others and then ran for the hills while screaming, "There has to be a better way!"
Striking out on your own against the mainstream of society takes courage, confidence, trust, and {you know what is coming next} patience.
We are a unique breed of humans who believe that we step out of the societal norm and make it ourselves. We can lead, make all the decisions, and accomplish all the required tasks! We trust first in ourselves that we know what we want and will achieve it because we can count on ourselves to make it happen.
We may need to prepare for the patience it takes to achieve our dreams in business.
Patience is learned. Patience is a skill.
Marketing understands how our brains operate. Our hopes, dreams, and desires are triggered by telling us we can make lots of green pieces of appreciation work for us without much effort! We can be "authentically" us and the money will fall into our laps!
And then it doesn't.
But Jamie, I did all of the things!
I designed a logo!
I hung my sign out!
I designed a website!
I optimized my LinkedIn profile!
I had professional photos taken!
I have all of the social media channels!
I created a fantastic offer that no one could refuse!
Where the heck is the money?
Yes, you can click to watch the video if you need a mid-day rap!
Now, let’s sweep the brain…
Working for yourself is hard.
Working for yourself takes patience.
And, patience is not inaction.
It's true; when you start your own business, you need to consider everything I mentioned above:
A logo helps bring brand awareness.
A website allows potential customers to learn more about who you are and what you offer.
Professional photos visually represent what you look like and provide humans with a way of connecting with you.
Oh, and the offer you created is incredible! I know you put your heart and soul into each detail from the beginning to the end.
{If you struggle with getting your offer from idea to execution, I can help! It's my jam!}
But business is more than that.
Being in business is understanding what the humans around you need. Humans have a desire to feel comfortable and safe.
What problem do you solve?
How do you make their lives easier?
What value do you bring into their lives?
Then, consider the market around you. Are you the only one that offers your solution?
How does your pricing compare?
How are you showing up with your brand, and where?
How are you different from others that provide a similar service?
People buy from those they like, know, and trust. Period.
What relationships have you built?
How do you bring safety and comfort with your product or service?
How are you building trust with potential buyers, colleagues, and collaborators?
Then, the moment you've all been waiting for…
Patience.
Running your own business is similar to gardening. It doesn't make sense to go out every day and dig through the soil to check on a seed to see if it's produced anything yet.
You don't expect a plant to grow 24 hours after it's been planted. {If you do, let me have you take a step back to last week's definition of patience}
Patience is not inaction.
When you plant seeds, you water them, ensure nutrients are in the soil, and you will tend to the weeds often so the sun can reach the earth and the plant can successfully grow. Then, you can speak kindly to the plants or play music! {Pro-top: you can do that for yourself, too!}
Patience is being kind to yourself and others while you wait.
How you talk to yourself matters. We'll dig into this more next week for Manage Your Mind.
This week I invite you to think about the following:
The seeds you can plant today. Who can you reach out to to build a relationship? Have you wanted to connect with someone you've met at Curated Conversation?
The seeds you planted. Do they need tending to? Is there a client, colleague, or opportunity you've meant to reach out to? Right now is a great time.
How can I be patient with the seeds I've already planted? Unschedule that 3rd follow-up email. They have yet to learn to communicate clearly and kindly if they have not responded. They are ghosting you, and it's time to move on.
The seeds that are in bloom. How do you follow up after its spectacular bloom has passed? What is next for them? How do you stay in touch, stay connected and work towards the next opportunity?
