🧠 Weekly Mind Sweep #87| Bonus Week | Compassion

Let’s sweep the brain…

My heart bursts to be in a community where other women get curious to share perspectives and personal experiences while also recognizing there are moments where we just need to be.

There is a deeper energy to experiencing this in person.

Being present in a group aware of the importance of self-compassion, boundaries, and those deeply familiar with the vulnerability of showing our emotions to others.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Amidst a beautiful conversation around a card we pulled, a group member felt a wave of emotion that bubbled up and spilled out through their eyes. What I witnessed after that was a beautiful example of genuine compassion.

Each person sat comfortably, holding space with empathy for the moment of emotion.

We’ve all been there. A wave coming when you least expect it—feeling vulnerable in front of others in a public setting. All knowing that the spilling out is needed as we learn how deep the feeling is. You recognize it is so deep in your soul that you can’t control the flow.

We sit.

We breathe.

With patience, with empathy, with compassion.

The action of holding the space. We use our new tool - Do you want to be heard, helped, or hugged?

The response? “I just need a moment to be here.”

Here.

Here, in this community of women that understand.

Here, where I feel safe to allow these emotions to surface and feel the release.

Here, where I can recognize that I’m not alone, and I can ask for support.

Here, where it’s safe just to be.

Here, where the support is just what I need at the moment.

Here, where no one is trying to solve anything.

Here, where there is patience, understanding, and genuine compassion.

Each time we create and sit in a space of compassion for other like-hearted people, we change the world.

Here, compassion has its ripple effect and spills out into our homes, relationships, and businesses.

Thank you for being in this community. Thank you for sharing the profound vulnerability of your souls with me. Thank you for being on the journey with me, filling my heart and my passion for curiosity. [*1]

You are phenomenal humans, and I’m honored to sit by your side.

Thinking about safe spaces…

I wanted to share a beautiful description of Safer Spaces that I learned attending Project Empathy Meetings. (learn more about Project Empathy at the bottom of this blog)

We do not believe we can offer each other "safe space." Any space in which we are working together can become unsafe within moments. We do strive for "safer space" as described by Marin Burton and used here with her permission:

Safer space is a place where people can come as they are to discover, assert, and empower their voices. Safer space is a place where people can come as they are to encounter and listen deeply to the voices of others. Safer space is grounded in respect; it is a place where we assume positive intent. People within safer spaces are working toward developing trust over time and are seeking to understand first. Safer spaces require continual work and mindfulness. A seemingly safe space can turn unsafe within moments. How we handle those moments is what really determines the safety of the space.  Spaces are safer when we take responsibility for what we say, feel, and think to the extent that we can and when we admit that we cannot when that is the case.

This has become a new space for my digressions.

[*1 ] I promise to bring back digressions next week!

What I’m reading

The Neuroscience of You. How Every Brain Is Different and How to Understand Yours

by Chantel Prat

From University of Washington professor Chantel Prat comes The Neuroscience of You, a rollicking adventure into the human brain that reveals the surprising truth about neuroscience, shifting our focus from what’s average to an understanding of how every brain is different, exactly why our quirks are important, and what this means for each of us.

While other scientists focus on how “the” brain works “on average,” Prat argues that our obsession with commonalities has slowed our progress toward understanding the very things that make each of us unique and interesting. Her field-leading research, employing cutting-edge technology, reveals the truth: Complicated as it may be, no two brains are alike.  This book invites the reader to understand themselves and others by zooming in so close that we all look gray and squishy.

If you find that you’re often dancing to the beat of a pen tapping against your desk instead of your own drum, I see you and get you. And I want you to keep on dancing.

I value getting to know the whole person as a business owner and taking a holistic, human view of their needs. I meet you where you’re at and support you in getting to where you want to go.

I love watching small business owners thrive and feel proud of what they’re building.
