Now, let’s sweep the brain…

Contemplation: Curiosity - Train your brain to be more curious!

1. Contemplation: Curiosity - Train your brain to be more curious!

I found this Fast Company article, and I feel seen.

Curiosity is, very simply, a desire to know more about things. There are two forms of curiosity:

  • a specific curiosity, which focuses on a particular topic

  • a general curiosity, which is the desire to learn about everything.

There certainly are some people who have a deep natural desire to know a lot about various topics. I call these people expert generalists. They have two psychological traits that drive this desire to learn:

  • Openness to experience—meaning that they find new ideas appealing.

  • Need for cognition—so they like to think about things.

This combination means that they are driven to think a lot about a new topic when introduced to a new topic.”

Do you feel like this describes you?

It goes on to describe 3 ways you can train your brain to be more curious:

  • Make lists - if you hear something you don’t know a lot about, write it down.

  • Make it easier to learn - We do what is easiest. Keep a list handy so that when you are waiting in line, you research a topic rather than scrolling through social media. Or, find a podcast on that topic and listen while you wash the dishes or walk.

  • Buddy Up - Find an accountability partner to join your curiosity hunt. Or, consider starting a blog where you can share what you are learning.

If YOU need a curiosity buddy, I am the human you have been searching for all along! Please find me on Marco Polo or Voxer, and let’s get curious!

2. Citation.

I couldn’t agree more.

Whenever I am experiencing something that might be challenging, I pause to question what the gift and opportunity in the situation might be.

I get curious.

  • Is there something I need to learn?

  • Is there something I need to be aware of here?

  • Is there another way to look at this situation; from a different perspective?

I challenge you to reflect on a recent situation where you may have felt like:

  • I can’t do it.

  • That frustrated me.

  • That was a waste of time.

Would you like to get curious and find the gift and opportunity in a situation?

3. Conversation Consideration: Curiosity meets consistency.

3. Conversation Consideration.

I stumbled across this blog, “Walking the World,” and loved this piece about “Why I walk.”

He uses this habit to learn; however, the more I read, the more I see his ability to be curious. He talks about his route and what he sees, and the value of walking.

Physical exercise aside, he holds the space to be curious about what is going on around him and write about it. I also see his consistency.

Regardless of his curiosity, he shows up consistently to take this walk.

It can be challenging as a creative to hone your curiosity.

We are idea generators, after all. If you need support executing your ideas or consistency, I can help

Check Your Reality: (Ask yourself hard questions.) Are you curious?

4. Check Your Reality: (Ask yourself hard questions.)

I love quizzes, don’t you?

  • If yes - let’s learn about your curiosity by taking this quiz!

  • If you don’t, well, will not taking it make you curious about what you missed?!? ←See what I did there? There is still time to go back and click!

My results:

  • You are an unconventional thinker - question authority, independent thinker, avoid mainstream trends, early adopter, and trendsetter. (Who, me?! HA-HA)

  • You are intellectually hungry - enjoy a wide range of subjects. Avid thinker. (you should see my bookcase)

  • You seek new experiences and people - open to trying new things and interacting with different personalities. (Yep, this should be the definition of Jamie Chapman in Merriam Webster.)

Is anyone shocked at these results?

I would LOVE to hear your results!! Take the quiz!
