You're an idea generator.
As a like-hearted and creative entrepreneur, you are full of exciting ideas. You're even skilled at brainstorming solutions when faced with challenges that come your way.
Extra points if they are "on fire" or "overdue."
When asked to take your big, brilliant idea to generate revenue for your business and break it down into small, actionable, and achievable steps, you'll probably rather get up from your desk and switch over that laundry finished in the washing machine…yesterday.
Now that your laundry is spinning in the dryer, the dishwasher has been emptied, and you've taken every single piece of trash out of your house, you return to your desk only to face your beautifully organized pages of to-dos with empty checkboxes glaring back at you.
Unfinished projects fill notebooks piled on your floor next to your desk.
Never mind those piles over there. You know precisely what each and every one of those items is and why they are there.
You have the talent, passion, and drive to own and operate your business, but something is missing.
Accountability.
If you hear the word accountability and your brain shuts off, that's a great sign you'd benefit from reevaluating your relationship with it.
You may tell yourself you don't want to be accountable and face the consequences of your actions from a place of fear or discomfort. You may feel pressure that triggers anxiety, perfectionism, or the need to avoid taking risks altogether.
Accountability isn't about perfection; it's about progress.
It's about being honest with yourself, taking responsibility for achieving your goals and being committed to personal and professional growth.
Accountability is the key ingredient to your business success. [1]
Let's dig into why accountability and support matter:
Increase Productivity: Accountability helps you set clear goals and break them into smaller steps. It can be especially helpful for neurodiverse entrepreneurs struggling with time management and focus. Having someone check in with you keeps you on track and more productive. Break big goals into small steps to stay on track. [2]
Build Self-Trust: When you consistently meet deadlines and deliver on promises, you rewire your neural pathways and increase your self-trust. With improved self-trust, you begin to hold yourself accountable, and your clients will trust you more. Even if you make a mistake, being honest and taking responsibility builds long-term relationships based on integrity. [3]
Encourage Innovation: Accountability pushes you to face uncomfortable tasks, helping you take smart risks and innovate. With support, trying new things is more manageable, even when challenging.
Support Problem-Solving: Accountability encourages self-reflection. You are regularly checking what works and what doesn't, allowing you to solve problems faster and avoid letting issues build up. Consider tools that support your execution of undesirable tasks. [4]
Create Transparency: Openness about your positive or negative progress or feedback fosters trust and clear communication. This keeps everyone on the same page and aligned with your business goals.
Break Perfectionism: For neurodiverse entrepreneurs, the fear of mistakes can lead to procrastination. Accountability helps you focus on progress, not perfection, allowing you to learn from mistakes without self-punishment.
As humans, we need support.
Accountability is like finally folding the laundry you've been putting off at a time outside of the time to be working ON your business. It's not glamorous, but it's necessary.
Accountability clears the mental clutter that holds you back.
With support, you can move past these distractions, check the meaningful to-do boxes, and take real steps toward working on your business to generate the revenue you need.
Although the idea of having accountability support may feel uncomfortable, it leads to sustained growth. It can help you become more productive, build self-trust, and share your brilliant ideas with the world.
Accountability isn't just a system or process; it's a mindset that allows you to own your journey, face discomfort, and grow a business you are proud of. [5]
