Now, let’s sweep the brain


Be more curious than certain.

We’re in the third quarter of 2022, how’s business?

Last week we discussed what perspective means, how to consider others’ perspectives and a reminder that who you surround yourself with matters.

This week I want to talk about how managing your brain gives you the tools to manage your business.

We’re digging deeper into perspective here, friends.

Manage your brain; Mind your Business.

Awareness is the first step. By understanding how your brain works, you will be able to shift your perspective more easily.

If you have better cognitive control you can:

  • Access a quieter mind, on-demand. (Wait, wha?!?)

  • Stay grounded while dreaming about the future. (What is this sorcery?)

  • Recover faster from personal and professional challenges. Don't let your mood define your day. Be more curious than certain. (<<Read that again)

And even though you care deeply, you don’t take difficult feedback or events personally. (I’ve always thought something was “broken” in me for working this way. Turns out, this ability strengthens me as a leader!)

Let’s look at 3 parts of the brain and what they do:

The Reptilian brain. This is where FIGHT, FLIGHT, and FREEZE lives.

  • Highly reactive. Think survival mode.

  • Blocks ability to plan and create.

The Limbic Brain.

  • Emotions and feelings live here.

  • Creates long-term memories.

The Neocortex.

  • Free will, thinking, and our capacity to learn, reason, and rationalize live here.

  • Where we can calm ourselves, change and integrate creative ideas.

So how do we get to the goodies of the Neocortex? (GIVE ME NEOCORTEX!)

  1. Name it to tame it. Label your feelings. “Writing in a journal activates the narrator function of our minds. Studies have suggested that simply writing down our account of a challenging experience can lower physiological reactivity and increase our sense of well-being.” Daniel Siegel

  2. Invite dissent. Changing your perspective is challenging. The ability to view circumstances through different lenses can help you shift your perspective. By learning this skill, you will be able to approach situations with an open mind. Keep an open mind and be curious. (Also, cue RGB)
