Now, letā€™s sweep the brainā€¦

It turns out I was wrong. Chickbook Creative.

Now, letā€™s sweep the brainā€¦

I have a marking system with business books that, as I read them, I use small post-it flags to identify things Iā€™d like to reference or reflect on when Iā€™m done with the entire book.

Then, when I finish, I distill the information and store my takeaways. (Do you have a book reading process, too?)

I have read some books without marking them at all. And then there is Think Again by Adam Grant, and Iā€™ll admit, Iā€™m obsessed. Iā€™m on page 75 of this book, and Iā€™ve lost count of the flags.

You know those books that just resonate with how you THINK! Iā€™m pretty confident that Adam Grant is my long-lost brother and modestly sure that Bill Belichick is my long-lost father. (If you missed my obsession with Bill, you should read more about that here.)

I immediately resonated with his term Confident Humility.

I do not:

  • Believe everything that enters my mind.

  • Internalize every feeling that enters my heart.

  • Make my beliefs my identity.

Confident Humility. Adam Grant

ā€œWe are not born with opinions. We have full control over what we believe is true. We choose our views, and we can choose to rethink them anytime we wantā€ Adam Grant.

For years I have thought that not taking feedback personally, being curious and constantly searching for new information, and desperately asking for constructive criticism was something broken in my brain.

It turns out I was wrong! < See what I did there?!

Iā€™m fascinated by the paradox of being CONFIDENT AND HUMBLE! Iā€™ve spent some time learning more about it, and Iā€™m geeking out to talk to you about it for August.

When I begin a new project, I start with the definition because I want to thoroughly understand where Iā€™m starting from.

Confident - adjective - feeling or showing confidence in oneself; self-assured.

Humility - noun - a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness.

As I dig deeper into the idea, I become more intrigued. One thing I learned from this article that I wanted to share with you is:

There are 5 key behaviors of confidently humble people.

They are able to D.O.U.B.T.

DETACH their identity from their opinions.

  • Values vs. Beliefs.

  • Are you searching for truth, or are you searching to be right?

OPEN themselves to contradictory ideas.

  • Are you comfortable with being wrong?

  • Do your beliefs cause bias?

Understand the UNCERTAINTY in the world.

  • Is your world composed of extreme black and white, or can you see the shades of gray?

  • Nooo, not the book!

BUILD a deliberative process.

  • Are you comfortable with accepting there is no PERFECT way?

  • Can you let go of your ego, listen and follow the FACTS and LOGIC?

TRIGGER and commit when the time comes.

  • Can you take action, or do you get stuck in deliberating?

  • Can you own the decision you are making with the information you have, and are you willing to own your mistakes if later proven wrong?

I LOVE the idea that to have confident humility; you need D.O.U.B.T.

Similar to my parenting style, itā€™s about moderation. You canā€™t be too confident, and you canā€™t be too humble. But donā€™t forget that troublemaker ego. I found this gorgeous visual by Joey Roth:

Could you use support with confident humility?
