With the gift of a week between topics, let’s use this time to build a bridge between our last topic and our next one.

Bias and Trust

After my personal experience in last Monday’s Curated Conversation, I reached out to every participant to offer a safe space to share their experience with me. [1]

I was not expecting what I received in return.

Each person, with their unique background and perspective, shared a different experience.

Despite being in the same room, engaging in the same conversation with the same people, and hearing the same thing, each person filtered our conversation on bias through their life experiences and personal biases, which created individual outcomes of experience.

This validated my perception that no one is immune from bias. Each and every one of us walked away with something different.

Trust is the key to bridging these gaps and encouraging open and honest communication.

This has been an enlightening experience to witness.

  • To re-wonder what even *IS* reality? [2]

  • To recognize why we may fall into belief patterns, as this awareness empowers us to actively work towards mitigating biases.

  • To acknowledge the importance of surrounding ourselves with various people, perspectives, and conversations that will support our personal and professional growth.

  • Trust and relationship matters. [3]

If we’re to actively work towards mitigating biases, it begins with having the trust and safety to do so.

As human beings, our brains are wired for safety, and we often operate our lives and businesses from a place of comfort. Doing so can create a feeling of sameness or feeling stuck.

Instead of operating from comfort, build trust and relationships with others.

Begin building the foundation of a safe space to do and say hard things. Experience things outside of your comfort zone, and begin sharing from a place of vulnerability.

Begin to open yourselves up to judgment and discernment.

That is where the magic begins!

By practicing this regularly, our brains learn that it’s okay to stretch our comfort zone, speak when our voices tremble, and share our perspectives out loud. This builds the foundation of a relationship with others that shows our humanness and our willingness to learn and try something different.

When you witness that your experience is entirely different from my experience, you begin to:

  • Remove the labels of “right” or “wrong.”

  • Notice the discomfort that arises, discern, and choose something different from what feels comfortable.

  • Recognize that the brain automatically feeds information from the deep mental maps that have grown from your past experiences.

When we create a safe space for ourselves, our thoughts, and ideas while remaining open to consideration from others, we also create a space for others to do that as well. From there, your work begins to ripple out to others you are building relationships with.

Considering bias in our businesses is as important as considering it in our personal lives.

Whether you are an entrepreneur, small business owner, or large corporation, your actions are witnessed by others who move through the world differently than you do.

Bias and trust are the foundation of bridging where you stand and where your customers are.

Are you playing it safe, or are you stretching to build trust and meet the diverse needs of your customers?
