Confident Humility | What’s On My Mind

A review of our month of Confident Humility:

Week 31: We learned what Confident Humility is, the importance of humility, and considering detaching from our thoughts and perspectives while questioning our points of view.

My favorite takeaways from Curated Conversation were:

  • Find comfort in not knowing

  • It takes courage to be confident

  • We make connections from the gold and the sh!t!

  • Is it just “good or bad,” or are their shades of gray?

Week 32: We have work to do. Are you confident enough to let others shine? Can you say, "I don't know?"

My favorite takeaways from Curated Conversations were:

  • When you fall off the wagon of the inner work, you lose confidence in yourself.

  • Intelligent women don’t fall in love with potential.

  • Comfortable people don’t change.

  • Screw you and your surrender, Robin Thomas!

Week 33: We managed the mind gap between expected and received feedback. Changes in self-esteem depend not only on whether other people like you but on whether you expect to be liked.” Learning our cognitive blind spots leads to greater intellectual humility. Embrace mistakes.

My favorite takeaways from Curated Conversations were:

  • What would it be like to just let go? #FUSurrender

  • There is a difference between knowing “stuff” and knowing who you are

  • Can you be comfortable in not knowing?

  • Our job is to use a compass and find what is activated by this situation. Does this bring me energy, or does it drain my energy?

Now, let’s sweep the brain

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything - George Bernard Shaw.

Having to reconsider something we believe deeply can make us feel like we are losing our identities. Are you willing to do the inner work of evolving your beliefs? Lead with questions and be ready to admit when you are wrong.

Change is hard

“You can be confident in your ability to achieve a goal in the future while maintaining the humility to question whether you have the right tools in the present. That is the sweet spot of confidence.” Adam Grant

When you feel imposter syndrome, can you believe in your ability to do hard things? Can you have enough humility to dare to be different, learn from the process, and admit your mistakes? You gain confidence by achieving challenging goals.

You can learn. What a gift!

Balancing confidence and humility reminds me of being on a seesaw as a child. You’d grab a friend and take turns riding up and down, taking in the playground views. It would be fun to balance the see-saw perfectly while lightly tapping your toes to the ground to see if you can get it in the middle. When you reach the “perfect” spot, your friend might hop off, slamming you to the ground.

It reminds me of the imbalance if you have too much confidence or humility.

It takes a delicate balance to be confident and humble. And, there is no “perfect balance.” Instead, it’s working on building your confidence by trying and humbling yourself by admitting when you are wrong.

I thrive on finding supportive women in business who share their points of view and challenge my thoughts. Facts and reality sometimes knock me to the ground, too. #surrender

The lesson here is to recognize where things are wrong, understand that not everything you think is a fact, and hold yourself accountable by admitting your mistakes.

Finally, have the courage and confidence to stand back up and try again.

As entrepreneurs, we’re familiar.

I’ve finishing the book Think Again by Adam Grant. I LOVE his Actions for Impact section at the end. A few that stood out to me were:

  • Think like a scientist

  • Define your identity in terms of values, not opinions

  • Harness the benefits of doubt

  • Embrace the joy of being wrong

  • Build a challenging network, not just a support network

  • Expand your emotional range

  • Throw out your 10-year plan

  • Rethink your actions, not just your surroundings

  • Make time to think again
