The Brains Primary Goal Is Survial

Mind Over Matter

Curated Conversation: September; Choice.

Now, let’s sweep the brain

We are continuing our conversation about CHOICE this week, adding how it pertains to your MIND.

Mind Over Matter.

You might choose not to read this email today based on a variety of factors that may differ from those that would influence you if you decided to read it tomorrow. Either way, thank you for choosing to read it!

A quick google search estimates that we make approximately 35,000 conscious decisions daily.

Add that to all the unconscious decisions (stopping at red lights, getting lost in social media scrolling), and it's no wonder our cognitive load is hefty.

Our brain functions in two modes:

  • Automatic (habits/reactive/intuition)

  • Deliberate (rational/analytical).

Our deliberate choices are finite; we can only make so many each day. Too many decisions and too much information deplete cognitive resources. Mini-decisions we make daily — from deciding to respond to a mobile notification to picking which shoes to wear — eat the fuel we need to make crucial decisions.

The best way to make a choice is to:

  • Determine your goal

  • Determine its value

  • Examine and arrange the options to reach it

  • Determine the likelihood of each option meeting your goal

  • Choose the option with the highest possibility of meeting it

  • Use the experiment's outcome to adjust your plans and how you make future decisions.

Well that seems logical, simple and to the point.

Unfortunately, our brains don't work that way. Decision-making is a complex process affected by various factors like feelings, instincts, and emotions. When making a choice, our brains work through emotion (anterior insula) and reason (prefrontal cortex), but there is also memory and experience.

Throw in some biases and feelings, and it's incredible we get out of bed every day! (I'm proud of you for getting up today, and if you're still in bed reading this, that's ok too!)

A 2013 study found that 15-minutes of mindfulness meditation can help people make more intelligent choices.

When deciding, we form opinions and choose actions via mental processes influenced by biases, reason, emotions, and memories—the simple act of deciding supports the notion that we have free will.

Just as you feel like you’ve made a decision and think you are in charge, BOOM!

A decision occurs far before our consciousness is aware. According to research by the Max Planx Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science, "the brain activity of the decision can be encoded up to 10 seconds prior to your awareness" of making the decision. Your conscious thoughts simply justify the decision.

Wait, my mind is deciding the matter before I even know it?!? Is free will an illusion?

Friend, we're going to have to take the topic of free will and put it on the shelf for another day!

Using habit creates a robust neural highway and can cruise to a decision without thinking. 45% of decisions are habits.

Decision-making is an energy-consuming process.

Our brain is looking for rewards and incentives. If you want to decide and one outcome leads to unicorns and rainbows, well then, duh. You're likely to choose that outcome.

Our environmental conditions influence our brains. The people around us influence the choices we make. Our subconscious absorbs data around us. Are you focused, or are you distracted?

Remember, the brain's primary goal is survival.

  • Our emotions affect all our decisions.

  • Most decisions involve some kind of reward we receive as a result.

  • Poor decision-making can be a result of dysfunctional brain activity or the impact of negative emotional states such as extreme anxiety.

There are no "right" decisions in life and business. However, when an abundance of options surrounds us, it's easy to experience choice overload. The key is to simplify the decision and not ruminate over the many roads not taken.

Let's connect and create a better strategy for you and your business.
