Now, let’s sweep the brain…

As entrepreneurs, relationships are vital to our success.

So, we network.

While it's nice to have a colleague to attend an event with, sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone and sign up for an occasion without knowing anyone.

When you walk into this event, you will look for someone you know; if you don't, you'll begin looking for a friendly or approachable face.

We are social beings. We are wired to connect.

The ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the caudate nucleus send dopamine rushing through your body when you meet someone you already know. [Source].

Seeing a familiar face feels good to our brain and nervous system.

Running into a loved one or someone you're attracted to activates hormones and neurotransmitters in your brain, giving you "butterflies." [Source]

Throughout history, we've lived and learned in small communities causing relationships to become our natural habitat.

Connecting with others meant better protection, food and water, care-taking, and more mating opportunities. Individually we felt supported, safe, and had a sense of belonging, all of which were critical for survival.

"Love is a biological necessity—it's as needed for our well-being as exercise, water, and food," said neuroscientist Stephanie Cacioppo, Ph.D., author of Wired for Love: A Neuroscientist's Journey Through Romance, Loss, and the Essence of Human Connection (Macmillan, 2022). "From a neuroscientific viewpoint, we can really say that love blossoms in the brain." [Source]

Relationships have shaped the brain into a social organ.

Networking is similar. We build communities and support each other for our business survival. While meeting someone new at a networking event raises our dopamine levels and excites us with possibilities, we must be willing to work to nurture the relationship for it to last.

What is one small thing you can do right now to nurture a relationship?

Jamie Chapman

Oh, Hi! I’m Jamie Chapman

I’m a Small Business Consultant who recognizes you might do things a little bit differently, and I’m here for it. I help support small businesses in a wide variety of industries and have a special place in my heart for neurodiverse entrepreneurs and ADHD business owners.

If you find that you’re often dancing to the beat of a pen tapping against your desk instead of your own drum, I see you and get you. And I want you to keep on dancing.

I value getting to know the whole person as a business owner and taking a holistic, human view of their needs. I meet you where you’re at and support you in getting to where you want to go.

I love watching small business owners thrive and feel proud of what they’re building.

Founder and Owner of Chickbook Creative, I’ve gained years of career experience in systems, processes, accountability, leadership, and project management. I bring a multi-faceted approach to problem-solving and extensive knowledge of executive functioning, habit formation, and the neurodiverse and ADHD entrepreneur’s mind.

I see and understand the ADHD entrepreneur brain at work, and I'm passionate about supporting neurodivergent business owners in a way that lets them shine their light and bring their gifts to the world for all to see (and pay them for!).
